Mike Fleming
I am a graduate of the College for Creative Studies in downtown Detroit, Michigan. I majored in Illustration, however I have been a Graphic Designer and Large Format Printer for the last ten years. Illustration is of course My first love, and I have continued to improve My style, and craft, doing freelance work whenever I can.
I am a nerd of history, sci-fi, and fantasy. I love Myths and Legends, Tolkien, BattleTech, Steampunk, Pathfinder, and a thousand other works.
My Process...
It all comes down to history, style, and canon… When I am given a project, I look and think of history, and how I can use the world around us to build from. I consider the style of the genre, and incorporate it into the piece, so that it flows easily into previous works. If it’s Greek Myth, or Steampunk, or Tolkien, the style has to feel like it belongs in those worlds. Canon, the story or history you are adding too. You want to compliment what has come before, to focus on the world, its history, its people, and build from there. Researching a type of BattleMech, a fictional nation-state, the history of a noble house, etc. You don’t want to add talking Dinosaurs to a work, just to have them there. They have to feel like they live organically within the piece.
